I am 64 Bit

August 28th, 2007

Just like Hanselman, I was a bit apprehensive in deciding to install 64 bit Vista on my new machine. What would be different? Would my drivers work? What would break that I totally depend on in my toolbox?

My new machine happens to be a Dell Latitude D830. The driving factor behind installing Vista64 on it was the fact that 32 bit Vista on this platform can only address 3G or so of RAM and I bought 4G to go into the box. I had to either live with 1G of un-addressable RAM in my machine or go 64 bit. New millennium, here I come.

THIS THING SCREAMS. As an example, this is the fastest blog post I have ever written.

Conversely, installing the base system has taken about 3 days of waiting. Jeesh.

Great! I’m trying to do the same with my D830 to no avail. Keeps blue screening the first time it tries to boot and it happens so fast I can’t read any error details.

    Did you do anything special?

    Thanks.

Flash your BIOS. Good luck, it is worth it.
