Want to be a better speaker? Try Toastmasters

March 31st, 2008

I’ve been a part of Toastmasters for two years now and I can say "it works".  My speaking skills have really improved since becoming a member.  I recently finished with the 10th speech in the first series.  Soon, I should receive my "Competent Communicator" certification.

It’s a great environment for learning to speak better.  Everyone is in the same boat, all working to improve.  You get feedback to help you improve.  In addition, you give feedback to others to help them as well.

Even if doing big speeches and presentations is not your thing, being able to quickly form and present a thought can certainly help in many situations.  The Table topics part of Toastmasters helps you practice thinking on your feet, forming your thoughts and make a quick presentation that will get your point across clearly and concisely.

There are many clubs out there.  Some meet in the morning, some at noon.  Most likely you can find one that works with your schedule.  Check out http://www.toastmasters.org/ to find a club near you.

Congratulations on achieving your Competent Communicator designation, Scott.

I hope you will continue to work on improving your speaking skills as you tackle some of the advanced manuals which offer new challenges and speaking tips.
