Scott Nichols
I am Scott Nichols I live work and play in the Boise Valley in south west Idaho and love it, nice place to raise a family which I have been doing since 1993. Prior to that time you would have found me basking in the sun of my old stomping grounds, the southern Californian LA basin. Have to admit the weather was nice, although when the local news is giving daily air quality warnings and you can actually see/taste the air there are problems.
I am one of those strange people who has had a colorful professional life. I actually began my professional career in the EMS (emergency medical services) profession as a Firefighter/Paramedic and for added excitement trained as a reserve deputy sheriff. People always ask me how I went from jumping out of windows (only in the movies) to pounding keyboards, well it is a long story and if you ever see me sometime ask, and I would be more than happy to share that with you.
I started my career in the IT profession in 1994. Well, back then I worked with a lot of different technologies, platforms and systems, none of which I am going to mention here mainly because I never want to touch them again. These days I openly admit I have converter over to the dark side and am a complete and utter Microsoft .Net junky/advocate (any language but C# is my preferred). So much so, I am one of the leaders of the Boise .Net Developers User Group www.netdug.com, come check us out if you are in the area. You will also find me presenting on .Net topics at www.BoiseCodeCamp.com
For my day job you will find me working as a Senior Software Engineer at URS Corp – Washington Division www.wgint.com developing custom software solutions primarily as the teams software solution architect. I also spent nearly 15 years at Micron Technology www.micron.com as a Process Management Software Engineer. In addition I have a small consulting company where myself and a couple of my friends do some moonlighting on the side.
I guess the only other item I would like to mention is during the dot COM days I helped start up and manage a small web hosting/development company call Idaho Central Internet Services as the Chief Technical officer. It lasted 4 year before we closed the doors. Have to say it was a blast, learned a ton. You know what they say, all good things have to come to an end sometime.
In closing, I consider myself one of the few people in the IT industry whose favorite hobby is actually his day job. Yes, I write code for fun on my days off. I simply find programming work quite rewarding and challenging. Not the adrenaline rush you get from jumping out of a burning building, but it has its moments in a subdued kind of way.
I am not a total geek, I love the outdoors and when I am not glued behind my key board you will find me working in my yard, hunting, camping or doing a little fishing and archery practice with my three daughters. Kids are great, I actually like mine, and they are all teenagers
