Written in 1985, Stephen Hunter‘s Tapestry
of Spies ( also published as The Spanish Gambit ) is one of Hunter’s
older novels. The story revolves around the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s,
bringing together characters from all conceivable sides of the conflict. Wrapped
into a single story we meet Anarchists, Communists, Fascists, Nazis, and Empiricist’s.
Not knowing nearly as much about this conflict as some others in history, the story
was a bit confusing as I didn’t know where the characters loyalties were. It
helped to keep things straight to remember that this was one of the major contributing
conflicts that lead to Germany’s march across Europe.
This was not a bad story, but Dirty
White Boys was better and nothing compares to Hunter’s character Bob the
Nailer.
