I am not yet sure who Jared Richardson and Will Gwaltney are, but they have
already changed my life. Their new book, Ship It! contains everything
that I wish I knew about software development exactly 5 years ago. This is the
time in my career when I first became responsable for an entire team of developers. To
be fair, some of the ideas in the book were not around 5 years ago, like Continuous
Integration. Most of them were, like Source Control Systems, but we could sure
have been using it better.
The things covered in this book are exactly what every great developer will come to
understand after a few years anyway. If you have been out of school and writing
code for any more than a year, do yourself a favor and get this book today.
Ship It! discusses how to functionally structure and operate a Software Development
Team in the real world, covering tools, processes, and people. jared and Will
include pearls of wisdom that have traditionally been the fruits of years of angst.
If you are a Development Team Lead or a Development Manager, you should be fired
if you don’t read this book. I am very seriously considering making this required
reading for my whole team.
