Nelson Demille is one of my favorite writers
and he has revived one of his more charming characters, NYPD Detective John Corey,
in The Lion’s Game.
Oh, Corey, you are incorrigible. This character is such a cliché, but
jeez, I love him. Sometimes a grizzled cop is just the ticket for a good novel. The
thing that strikes me about several of DeMille’s novels is that they address the issue
of Middle Eastern terrorists at a very personal level, and this novel was published
in January of 2000. In Plumb
Island, DeMille even has Corey muse about a terrorist using a jetliner
as a “flying bomb”.
Nelson DeMille is truly a fun writer, who takes on serious subjects, but not in a
serious way. He is a clear and concise writer without pretense and just a good storyteller.
