Time Tracking

Why is this so hard?  We are using MS Project Server and it is no secret that
Microsoft got it wrong.  There are 3 things wrong with time tracking via
MS Project Server.

  1. The web is not the right application platform for this task.  Having the responsiveness
of a smart client in this data intensive task clearly dictates the use of a smart
    client.

  2. KISS.  Keep it simple stupid.  Have you tried to navigate those active X
    controls? Yikes.
  3. I should not have to go “out there” to enter time.  You should come ask me for
    it.

The smart client should have these features:

  • Runs as a system tray icon, always available.

  • Prompts me at the same time every day, between 8-5 to remember to submit time.

  • When I click it, I get a hierarchical menu that pops up and lets me navigate to the
    project item that I want.

  • I get to categorize the projects as I see fit, not as the PMO sees them in Project
    Server.

  • I get to name the projects as I see fit, not as the PMO sees them in Project Server.

  • I get to see all projects, but am allowed to remove the ones from my list that I will
    never be interested in.

  • Once I select a project from my menu, I get a single form that is the time entry form
for this project.  Go nuts.  The form could also provide links to me like
    the project home page, etc…

So this gets me to the right place to enter time in 2 clicks.  Awesome.
The app knows who I am, so no need to authenticate.

Does anyone make such an animal now?  If so, I cannot find it.
