Author Report: Daniel Suarez

Category:General PostTag: :

I stumbled across the novels of Daniel Suarez a few weeks ago via an impulse spend of an Audible credit. I am now well into his latest novel and am looking forward to whatever he’s working on now.

His first two novels are a two-part story: Daemon, and Freedom?. I have totally dug them, especially the 7 layers of metaphor and earnest mods to plausibility.

game-theory techno-thriller cyber-punk IT rouge-developer near-sourcing commando near-dystopia AI assassin spy epic cyborg spies viruses the-good–clich?s game-design mad-scientist long-running-workflow 🙂 anti-consumerism

The most interesting thing is Daniel Suarez himself. According to his website he’s a specialist consultant-developer slinging for bounty living in southern California. His bio reads as many of ours do at some point at some point. In short this dude seems to just be one of us geeks who also writes a bang-up novel.

I have no doubt I am late to the game on this writer, but I’m old. I’ve only just gotten around to a lot of things. If you haven’t read it yet, I recommend starting with Daemon. It’s fun and enjoyably thoughtful.

  1. If not having heard of Daniel Suarez is an indicator of agedness then I must be older than you! Thanks for the recommendation. I will read this on my new long bus commute to the eastside.

  2. I don’t know how old you guys are but maybe age isn’t a good excuse for not knowing Daniel Suarez’s work. I turn 51 tomorrow and have read, or rather listened to, all three of his books.

Kill Decision is a techno-thriller like the first two but adds more scientific detail, with looks at insect swarming behaviour. It also has a slightly more military angle.

I’ve listened to the Audible.com audio versions, all narrated by Jeff Gurner who does a good job of bringing the stories to life. If there are any of the three you’ve yet to buy then I’d suggest giving the audio version some consideration.

  3. I just finished Threat Vector by Tom Clancy. It takes on cyberwarfare. I just downloaded ‘Daemon’ and am looking forward to listening to it on my way home tonight.
